Australia is set to reopen the borders for international travelling

For the first time in over two years, Australia has announced the reopening of its borders to vaccinated tourists and other visa holders.

“We look forward to welcome you back if you’re doubly vaccinated,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said. Many industries, including foreign education, will be relieved by the reopening on February 21.

Throughout the coronavirus epidemic, Australia has some of the tightest border restrictions in the world. The government closed the borders in March 2020. To counteract Covid, it prohibited most foreigners from entering the nation and capped overall immigration.

Since December, some overseas students and skilled migrants have been allowed to enter the country.

Mr Morrison said on Monday that individuals entering Australia once the borders are completely reopened will need to provide proof of vaccination: “That is the law. It is required of everyone to follow it “he stated.

Unvaccinated travellers who have a medical reason for not being vaccinated must still request for a travel exemption and, if approved, must quarantine in a hotel.

Melinda de Boer, 44, of Switzerland, told the BBC that she was finally intending to see her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, in Melbourne.

“For over three years, her grandkids haven’t seen her. We’d like to go over the holidays in October or December “she stated.
