Estelle Harris, well known for her role as George Costanza’s mother on “Seinfeld,” died on Saturday. She was 93 years old.
Estelle Harris, whose unique voice was sought after in a variety of roles, portrayed Estelle Costanza in the 1990s comedy, frequently bickering with her on-screen husband Jerry Stiller and her fictitious son, Jason Alexander.
“It is with tremendous regret and grief that I announce the death of Estelle Harris today, leaving a void in my heart too profound to explain,” her son Glen Harris said in a statement given by her agent Michael Eisenstadt. “Her compassion, enthusiasm, sensitivity, humour, empathy, and love were virtually unparalleled, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.”
According to the statement, Harris was born in New York City and reared in a tiny coal mining community in Pennsylvania. After returning to New York, she married and had three children.
Harris began her career in neighbourhood theatre before transitioning to regional companies and summer stock performances around the country.
She eventually achieved fame on Madison Avenue, appearing in as many as 25 national television advertisements in a single year, garnering her the moniker “Queen of Commercials,” according to the statement.
Harris played Mrs. Potato Head in the “Toy Story” trilogy, as well as other animated characters in “Tarzan II,” “Brother Bear,” and “Teacher’s Pet.”
