France bans gay ‘conversion therapy’

A new law in France prohibits so-called conversion therapy and authorizes jail time and fines for practitioners who attempt to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQ persons using the scientifically discredited practice.

The new law in France was unanimously passed by the National Assembly on Tuesday evening, with a vote of 142-0. People who are guilty of attempting to “convert” LGBTQ people to heterosexuality or traditional gender expectations face criminal consequences under the law.

The law also allows campaigners to launch civil claims on behalf of victims, a step that has been welcomed in parliament as a game-changer for those who are hesitant or unable to contact the police directly.

Laurence Vanceunebrock, a lawmaker who helped shepherd the bill through parliament, said it will go after “all those who associated an identity or sexual orientation with illness.” She addressed the National Assembly, “There is nothing to treat.”
