India had to withdraw from the Asian Cup after being unable to field a team for their Group A match against Chinese Taipei on Sunday because of a Covid-19 outbreak within the squad.
It has been learned that nearly a dozen members of the Indian camp tested positive for the virus, leaving them with no choice but to withdraw from the crucial encounter, effectively ending their campaign.
The Asian Football Confederation stated in a statement that India failed to name a minimum of 13 players required to play the match.
“According to Article 4.1 of the ‘Special Rules Applicable to AFC Competitions During the COVID-19 Pandemic’ (Special Rules), India was thus unable to play in the match, and the full requirements of Article 4.1 shall apply,” the AFC stated in a statement.
