Pakistan parliament is set to elect new PM

After Imran Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in the early hours of Sunday, the Pakistan parliament will choose a new prime minister on Monday. The head of an opposition alliance that attempted to topple Mr Khan, Shahbaz Sharif, is generally predicted to win a majority of votes.

Pakistan parliament is scheduled to vote at 14:00 local time (09:00GMT). After days of political turmoil and Supreme Court intervention, Mr Khan, 69, was voted out.

By dismissing parliament and calling for a quick election, he sought to thwart a prior attempt to bring a no-confidence resolution against him. The country’s Supreme Court, however, upheld an opposition petition alleging that his acts were unlawful and ordered the no-confidence vote to proceed.

Prior to Imran Khan‘s election in 2018, Mr Sharif, 70, was the chief minister of Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous state. Mr Sharif, the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), is known for his efficiency and hard work, and he is credited with considerable infrastructural developments.

Many bitterly compared him to his successor, Usman Buzdar, who was generally derided as unqualified and inept. Numerous commentators mention anger at Imran Khan’s failure to dismiss Mr Buzdar as one cause for the formation of a schism between Mr Khan and his formerly close friend, the Pakistani military.
