Philippines : Flooding, landslides kills at least 25 people

According to authorities, heavy rains triggered by a summer tropical depression killed at least 25 people in the central and southern Philippines, largely due to landslides.

Landslides killed 22 people in four villages in Baybay city, central Leyte province, on Sunday and Monday, according to local police head Lt. Col. Joemen Collado. At least six additional persons have been reported missing as a result of the landslides, and a search is ongoing, he added.

The government’s principal disaster-response agency confirmed three more storm-related deaths in the southern regions of Davao de Oro and Davao Oriental.

“A landslide happened in one community, and other victims were regrettably washed away by the flow of water,” Collado told the DZBB radio network. “At least six people were missing, but there might be more.”

Over the weekend, about 200 floods were recorded in various sections of the central and southern provinces, displacing around 30,000 households, some of whom were relocated to emergency shelters, according to officials.
