The police officer responsible for taking the life of an unarmed Black teenager and injuring the man’s 20-year-old girlfriend while halting them at a traffic stop in Waukegan, Illinois has been sacked from the department.
The anonymous officer was fired on Friday as he violated several policies and procedures, according to the Waukegan Police Department. The incident where 19-year-old Marcellis Stinnette was shot and his girlfriend Tafarra Williams was harmed happened three days earlier.
A demonstration was to be held demanding for justice on Saturday with over 200 people in the city in Lake County, a local organizer Clyde McLemore informed.
The protests and demonstrations against racism and police brutality have been happening all over the United States of America for the past six months. This spark was ignited when George Floyd was killed in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.
Waukegan is located south of Kenosha in Wisconsin. A number of aggressive protests have been seen in the locality following the killing of Jacob Blake, a black man on August 23.
As reported by the Waukegan police, a male officer from Spanish-American background was managing a traffic stop on Tuesday. He reasoned that he shot in the car because the vehicle moved into the reverse direction and he defended himself. The police found no firearm in the vehicle.
Satrese Stallworth, a relative of Stinnette informed that he died in the incident and Williams was severely injured in the abdomen and wrist. She is still under treatment in the hospital.
“We do not trust the police narrative in this case. We have seen over and over that the ‘official’ report when police kill Black people is far too often missing or misrepresenting details,” Williams’ attorney, Ben Crump, stated.
