On Monday, Pakistan’s National Assembly elected Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and former Opposition Leader, as the country’s 23rd Prime Minister.
“Mian Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif has received 174 votes,” said PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq, who was chairing the session after Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri resigned ahead of the vote.
Prior to the vote, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPs resigned en masse and stormed out of the National Assembly following a speech by former Foreign Minister and PTI contender for prime minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
Previously, former Prime Minister Imran Khan resigned from the House during a meeting with his parliamentary party delegation.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s younger brother was scheduled to take over as Prime Minister after former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was deposed following a no-confidence resolution against the rule.
The voting on the no-confidence motion ended in a defeat for the Imran Khan-led administration, with 174 votes in favour of the motion.
On March 30, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari declared Sharif’s candidacy as the Opposition’s candidate for Prime Minister during a joint news conference of the opposition parties. Shehbaz sharif is now the Prime Minister of the country.
