Shilpa Shetty was finally exonerated of obscenity charges by an Indian court 15 years after the Bollywood diva was kissed on stage by actor Richard Gere.
Footage from a 2007 Aids awareness event in Delhi showed the Hollywood actor kissing Shilpa Shetty on the cheek.
The allegations were just recently dismissed as “groundless,” with the court stating that she was the victim of an unwelcome approach.
The kiss sparked protests from hardline Hindu organizations at the time, who saw it as an affront to Indian values.
Kissing in public is considered forbidden in some parts of India. Mr. Gere hugged and kissed Shilpa Shetty on a public platform over 15 years ago at a charity event in Delhi, for which he later apologized.
The actor stated that he was attempting to demonstrate that kissing was a safe behavior that could not result in HIV transmission.
An arrest warrant issued for Mr. Gere in connection with the event was quickly quashed by India’s Supreme Court. It dismissed the celebrity’s accusations as being lodged for “cheap publicity.”
