WHO: Warns Lockdowns will stagnate economies

The apex organization that looks after the health and welfare of the world, WHO has advised all the leaders of the world against imposing a lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus infection, as opposed to what it said earlier that countries should be mindful as they reopen after the lockdown.

WHO representative Dr. David Nabarro said that such strict norms should only be seen as a last course of action, the Spectator, which is a British magazine, stated in a video interview.

“We in the World Health Organization do not advocate lockdowns as the primary means of control of this virus,” Nabarro stated.

“The only time we believe a lockdown is justified is to buy you time to reorganize, regroup, rebalance your resources, protect your health workers who are exhausted, but by and large, we’d rather not do it.”

Implications of lockdown

According to Nabarro, strict constraints can be the reason a country could undergo harm and grave consequences specifically on the worldwide economy. He added that lockdowns can contribute in deteriorating the already poor condition of many people. The countries relying on tourism as their essential source of revenue have been impacted severely.

“Just look at what’s happened to the tourism industry in the Caribbean, for example, or in the Pacific because people aren’t taking their holidays,” Nabarro informed.

The UN branch had cautioned earlier when the countries were about to reopen and ease lockdowns after the first wave of the virus.

WHO Director-General says

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is adamant on the fact that a country should not open schools and businesses as they will be shut down yet again if the outbreak surges.

Although, Tedros had advised the countries to strengthen other preventive steps, like expansive testing and contact trails, to avoid further lockdowns and more spread of the infection. “We need to reach a sustainable situation where we have adequate control of this virus without shutting down our lives entirely, or lurching from lockdown to lockdown — which has a hugely detrimental impact on societies,” he said.
